Meet Dr. Gregory Williams
President | Head of Creative Development and Talent Acquisition
“Music has always been my life.”
Dr. Gregory Williams is a distinguished musician, vocalist, songwriter, producer, arranger, entertainment executive, and founding member and leader of the legendary former Motown recording group Switch.
His passion for entertainment began in childhood—from performing as a solo vocalist in his kindergarten Christmas program and acting in school plays to leading his first band as a trumpet player at just nine years old. By age seven, Gregory had already declared that he would become a professional musician and entertainer—a dream he has been blessed to live throughout an extraordinary, multifaceted career.
As a teenager, Gregory refined his talents by singing and playing trumpet with vocal groups, Top 40 ensembles, and jazz bands throughout the Midwest. His career would eventually expand to include work as a recording artist, songwriter, producer, arranger, musician, artist manager, journalist, editor, columnist, and entertainment executive.
The Birth of Switch
Gregory’s professional recording career began with TNT Flashers, a Western Michigan band that later became White Heat. The group was managed by Soul Unlimited Productions, led by legendary singer and producer Barry White, and signed to RCA Records.
After the group’s departure from RCA and Soul Unlimited Productions, Gregory formed Switch. Within a year, the group secured a recording contract with Motown Records and went on to achieve national and international success.
During Switch’s Motown years from 1977 to 1983, the group earned platinum and gold albums and delivered timeless hits including “There’ll Never Be,” “I Call Your Name,” and “Love Me Over and Over Again.” As the group’s founder and leader, Gregory served as a producer, songwriter, arranger, musician, and vocalist, helping shape the signature sound that made Switch one of the most celebrated R&B groups of its era.
Following Switch’s departure from Motown, Gregory continued performing with members Jody Sims and Eddie Fluellen. The group signed with Total Experience Records and recorded another album before eventually disbanding. Gregory later toured briefly as a keyboardist for Arista recording artist GQ and established GWM Productions, producing artists affiliated with Sugar Hill Records, Jive Records, and other labels.
From 1987 to 1991, Gregory served as Vice President of A&R for Tavdash Records/Jive Records, applying his creative instincts and industry knowledge to identifying and developing talent.
His career later expanded into publishing and media. Gregory contributed to Right On! magazine and served as West Coast Coordinator for Sisters in Style magazine from 1993 to 2002. His responsibilities included writing, interviewing, feature editing, coordinating fashion photo shoots, styling, and serving as the voice behind the advice column “Ask a Man.”
Today, Dr. Gregory Williams continues his lifelong commitment to music and entertainment as President of Energize Entertainment and President and CEO of Switch Entertainment LLC. Drawing upon decades of creative achievement, executive leadership, and industry experience, he remains devoted to developing exceptional talent, creating meaningful opportunities, and building a legacy that inspires future generations.
“I knew and proclaimed at the age of seven that I would become a musician and entertainer. I have been blessed to live my dream.”
